RANDOM HOUSE STRUIK

Walking Cape Town Urban Walks and Drives in the Cape Peninsula

Sites covered include the Company Gardens, historic squares, Bo Kaap, Long Street, Grand Parade, Table Mountain, the Waterfront, Simonstown, Kalk Bay, Muizenberg, Wynberg, and many other suburban areas.  For each walk, the author sets the scene, and then describes highlights along the way, referencing historical events and points of interest. Box features offer additional  insights. I enjoyed the creative process of this project.  It is out-of-the-box mapping and the spec verges on the edge of full illustration.

Available September 2013 from http://www.randomstruik.co.za

The brief

  • Each map will show the landmarks discussed in the text (using a numbering system), the relevant street names, a key that will list the landmarks, distances, type of terrain and effort.

  • We want the maps to have a hand-drawn, illustrated, informal feel while still being legible, attractive and useful.

  • Use of full colour.

Field Guide: Battlefields of South Africa

It features 70+ battles all across South Africa, covering six different categories of war (colonial, Anglo-Zulu, 1st Anglo-Boer, 2nd Anglo-Boer, Voortrekker-related battles, indigenous wars and rebellions, frontiers wars).  Each battle (or subchapter) includes information about how to get to the site, what led up to the battle, a description of the actual battle and the action that went down, and the outcome or aftermath. The battles each have a timeline and some information boxes. And of course there are photographs – both historical and contemporary.

Twelve of the battles are categorised as major battles, mostly because they were decisive in determining the outcome of a particular war, or were particularly memorable and historical (e.g. Isandlwana). For these battles we require specific battle maps, which need to show the terrain (hills, rivers) where relevant, as well as troop movements and any other relevant information.

The author preferred the Barnard style spec for the hill illustration, but I simply could not reproduce this style correctly and offered the option within my skills set of a pencil shaded illustration for the hills. This project pushed many boundaries and had it not been for the patience and constant motivation from the managing editor, I may not have been able to be part of it.

Paths to Pubs: A Guide to Hikes and Pints in the Cape Peninsula

“The most detailed coverage yet of the many paths that crisscross the Cape Peninsula, this book describes 72 trails that traverse Table Mountain, the rocky headlands of Cape Point, and the mountains, ridges, beaches and forests of Constantia and the villages that hug the peninsular coastline. Best of all, however, there’s a chapter presenting 33 favoured watering holes where weary hikers can wet their whistles after they have worked up a sweat.

Besides a detailed description, each trail features a concise route summary, contour map, and GPS coordinates for the start and end points. A handy overview presents the distance, duration, difficulty, exposure and gradient of each route; colour photographs and varied fact panels on local flora, fauna, geology and history add lively interest. The carefully selected pubs have been rated according to atmosphere, value and quality of food, and useful icons illustrate where there are views or sports viewing facilities.

Mountain safety and emergency rescue advice and tips on hiking gear and what to pack are also included. This practical guide, written by veteran hiker Tony Burton, is a must-have for novice and experienced hikers as well as casual ramblers. Even teetotallers will not want to be without their copy.”

South Africa by Road: A Regional Guide

South Africa by Road: A Regional Guide is more than a mere travel guide; it is a comprehensive handbook to the country, giving insight into the many national treasures that line our highways and byways – from vibrant cities to charming country towns and one-horse dorps steeped in history. The ultimate companion for any road trip, it offers sound advice on the best routes, and contains all that holidaymakers need to know when planning their next vacation.

Full-colour photographs and an interesting mix of side panels will inspire travellers to take to the tarred and gravel roads of South Africa, and explore the many absorbing nooks and crannies of our extraordinarily diverse country. Each chapter gives an overview of a region’s climate, flora and fauna, and history and heritage, and highlights the most noteworthy places. Ideas for what to do in each location are outlined, as are key activities, routes and trails.

From hot-air ballooning to white-water rafting, 4x4 trails to strolls in the countryside, spelunking to visiting museums, and festivals to architecture, there is something for everyone. Customised full-colour maps in each of the 29 chapters show national, secondary and dirt roads, toll roads, passes, game reserves, national parks and nature reserves, as well as places of interest to help you plan your journey.  A separate 46-page road guide and 12 town plans complete the useful cartographic section.”
